Migraines, Headaches and Your Chiropractor
by Broughton Grange & Guilsborough (Kettering) based Chiropractor Fiona MacRae
A migraine is an intense headache. There are two types – common migraine, which is a severe headache with no warning symptoms, and a classical migraine, in which the headache is experienced after warning symptoms (collectively known as the “aura”).
Migraines can be debilitating. Trigger factors include tension in the neck and shoulders, which can be caused by postural stress. Poor posture whist using a computer is common, and a badly positioned laptop can be particularly harmful, resulting in abnormal curvature of the neck. Under such circumstances the neck and shoulder muscles tighten under the stress of holding the weight of the head and the spine can misalign.
My first concern is to identify the cause of the headache and, if its cause is musculoskeletal, help to predispose the body to correct the imbalance so helping to alleviate the pain. Maintaining skeletal alignment may help to reduce the likelihood of migraines recurring.
